How to Set Up Microsoft 365 on a New Windows PC
A practical new-PC checklist for signing in, installing Microsoft 365, activating apps, and confirming updates.
A new PC may include shortcuts or a trial, but that does not always mean the desktop apps are licensed. Start by confirming which Microsoft account owns or has been assigned the license.
Before downloading
Finish Windows Update and restart the PC. Confirm that you have enough free storage and a stable internet connection. If this is a work or school license, use the account supplied by the organization and check that an administrator has assigned desktop apps.
Installation checklist
- Sign in to the official Microsoft account portal.
- Open Services & subscriptions, or the Apps section for a work or school account.
- Choose Install and keep the recommended language and version unless you have a specific compatibility need.
- Open the downloaded setup file and allow Windows to make changes.
- When installation completes, open Word, select Account, and confirm the expected account and license appear.
After setup
Run Office updates from an app’s Account page, choose a default OneDrive location only if you want cloud synchronization, and test opening and saving a local document. Uninstall an unwanted trial only if it is a separate product and your licensed apps are working.

Why is Word asking me to buy Microsoft 365?

Can I copy Office from my old PC?
Use the official installer instead. Whether a one-time license can move depends on its license terms.
